Basketball Captain Spotlights

The boys varsity basketball team is currently 6-4 in The Western League. They are in third place behind Fairfax and Westchester. These are the boys varsity basketball captains Raheem Brumfield and Christian Morataya, both seniors who transferred from Palisades their junior year.

  1. What is your most memorable moment being on the team?

When we won the championship in the Roybal Tournament.

  1. How long have you been playing basketball?

I’ve been playing since I was like in sixth grade, but didn’t get serious about it ‘til    freshman year.

  1. Are you planning to play basketball in college?

Yes I am, at Central Arizona.

  1. What are your plans after high school?

Working out and preparing myself for college basketball season.

  1. If you didn’t play basketball, what other sport do you think you would have been interested in playing?

Maybe tennis or football, believe it or not.

  1. What are your goals as captain?

To win the first city championship in Venice history.

  1. As captain, what do you think the team can improve on?

Getting back to our high scoring games.

  1. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

My strengths is being a floor-general (A point guard or other player who provides leadership by running the offense). I can work on not being over-passionate at times.

  1. What is your most memorable moment being on the team?

When we were about to play LACES and we had a full dodge ball match in LACES team room and there was a kicking bag stand and then we would jump and kick it and then after the fun, we went out and beat them.

  1. How long have you been playing basketball?

I’ve been playing since I was five.

  1. Are you planning to play basketball in college?

Yes, but I need to find what college fits me.

  1. What are your plans after high school?

To go to a four-year college and play basketball and get a degree in international business and psychology.

  1. If you didn’t play basketball, what other sport do you think you would have been interested in playing?

I would be interested either playing football or tennis. I played tennis last year for three games.

  1. What are your goals as captain?

My goals as captain is for the team to win the city title and to potentially win state and make school history.

  1. As captain, what do you think the team can improve on?

We can improve on rebounding better against taller teams and shoot a little better and defend.

  1. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

My strengths are probably shooting the ball and getting to the basket. I feel like I can get better in defense and shoot smarter shots.
