Boys’ basketball, 9-2, has made history for not only Venice High but also for LAUSD.
The team has become the first team to make state championships for Venice High and the first to make CIF State Championships since 2010 for all of LAUSD.
“To be honest I knew we would make history with this team,” said captain Devyn Johnson ‘22. “This is a lot of our last years. We all have good chemistry with each other.”
The Gondoliers now travel to Sacramento to compete against Pleasent Valley with the hopes of winning home a CIF Division 3 championship.
Pleasant Valley, 10-0 in the regular season, definitely has the advantage over Venice, being the first in the eastern division.
“Tomorrow’s game is gonna be high intensity and we just gonna have to compete,” said captain Percy Jackson ‘22. “As long as we stick together, defend, and fight all four quarters, history will be made.”
To make the state championship, the Gondoliers beat Viewpoint Tuesday 62-55. After losing the first quarter by four points, the team stepped up and completely blew the other team out of the water.
“We weren’t rattled by the first [quarter] because we weren’t down by that much and I hadn’t gotten in a rhythm yet,” said Johnson.
