School has started, but Brat summer hasn’t ended.
I’m sure everyone has heard the term, “Brat Summer,” but do you know the lore behind it? The forever icon, Charli XCX has been on the music scene for over a decade, and has been putting out hits from, “Boom Clap,” to “Vroom Vroom.” Since the release of Brat, Charli has hit an all time high in popularity, gaining recognition for her no-skip album and club girl persona.
Brat Summer is not just a moment in time, but a lifestyle. The iconic neon green album cover with the low-quality stretched arial font creates a timeless style. The attention-grabbing yet simplistic design allows for her fanbase to create interchangeable versions of their own album covers.
This is exactly what junior Franki Amico, did for her ASB campaign posters. Amico ran for ASB Vice President, and all around campus you can still spot her posters advertising her campaign.
“I thought the neon green was something that can be seen really easily against the gray and white walls,” Amico said.
“The black font is big and it’s visible from far away, so if people see it, they want to get closer to see what it is about.”
Charli XCX’s album cover has become so influential that the hue of green used has coined its own name, “Brat Green”. The bold color pushes dynamic themes, allowing teens to experiment with their artistic side.
Charli XCX for over 15 years has been cultivating a diverse fanbase. Embracing individuality, Angels (XCX’s fan base name) are a diverse and accepting group, consisting of a wide range of ages, sexualities, etc. With the release of Brat, Charli brought in a new wave of fans, especially resonating with a young crowd.
Although the album peaked in popularity during the summer, it is carrying into the school year. The essence of Brat summer lives on in the hearts of Venice students.
