Katy Perry’s Controversial Career

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In the early 2000s there was a peak of amazing pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Beyonce, and many more. Plenty of these artists are very famous for current or past works. Artists like Beyonce and Lady Gaga continue performing for thousands of people at once because they are still so popular.

However, some of these artists didn’t do so well after their peak in music and popularity. For the most part they stopped being so successful because they stopped making music but some just kept going. It’s not a bad thing to continue to produce music even if you’re not as popular as you once were.

Katy Perry’s career started in 2001 with the name Katy Hudson and her first album was deemed unsuccessful. Her first hit was in 2008 when she released her single “I Kissed a Girl” and from then she gained more popularity. In that year she released another banger “Hot N Cold” which is probably her best song. She was doing pretty well with her music career, and in 2013 she rose up again with her songs “Roar” and “Dark Horse.”

Everyone has different music tastes so some people could really enjoy her most recent songs, but the songs with the most views are from 2008-2013. From the opinions I have heard, her songs that were released in recent years aren’t as good as they once were.

Katy Perry’s controversy started in 2014 when she set her mind on buying a property that was formerly a convent. Perry was rejected as a potential buyer by the two nuns that had originally lived there. The reason the nuns didn’t want her to buy it was because those nuns worked hard to own the estate in 1972 and it was a home to 52 nuns in the early years.

In 2011 only 5 nuns were left living in the convent and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which is a Latin church forced them to leave the property in order to sell it to Perry.  The Archdiocese of Los Angeles supported Perry’s decision to buy while the nuns didn’t; the church  sued the nuns. From then on they were in a legal battle that lasted years until 2015 when one of the nuns collapsed in court at 89. After that, the estate was sold to someone that wasn’t Katy Perry which eventually ended in Perry trying to buy it from them.

This was in 2016 but this event was one of the most memorable controversies of Perry’s career.  For the most part she’s been in the background of the music industry, but she hasn’t made any songs that were too popular since her peak in 2013.

However she recently shot back into relevance after going on a space trip this year.  The point of the space trip was to show women’s achievements in space though they received a lot of backlash.

Before the trip actually happened, there were already negative comments posted on social media about it being a bad idea and coming off as tone deaf.  One of the main points being made was about how they wrongfully titled it as a “women’s movement” when that doesn’t seem like the case. The message they were trying to send is that women-only groups are capable of going to space and to inspire young girls about careers such as astronomy. However this message seemed like a lame excuse to send these celebrities to space for fun because they were rich enough to afford it.

The trip itself cost about 28 million dollars which enraged people even more considering that the reason behind it was dumb. The people defending the trip argue that people are angry because the people involved are women and if men had gone to space they’d get praised. Which isn’t the case because for one, they are not astronauts who worked hard to be where they are. And two, if it really was a women’s movement, they would use that almost 30 million dollars to actually support women around the globe.

Post-flight, Katy Perry was interviewed about her experience which made the entire thing so much worse. In her words, she wanted to “put the ‘a**’ in astronaut” and it was her dream to “make space and science glam.”
