Gondoliers to play El Camino Real Royals in CIF LA City Section Open Division championship game at Dodger Stadium

After 45 years the Gondoliers make it to finals and will play at Dodger Stadium tomorrow against El Camino Real Royals in CIF LA City Section Open Division championship game.

Seniors Eli Altamirano, and Noel Moreno, captains alongside senior Canon King, said that this big accomplishment for a team that is majority seniors.

“It’s something that we’ve been wanting to get these past years when we haven’t been so lucky,” said Altamirano. “A lot of us just wanted to go out big, and just leave it all out this season.”

Senior Jesse Dominguez’s walk-off in Tuesday’s game against the Sylmar Spartans at CSUN that ultimately led the team into finals. The Gondoliers won 9-8 in eight innings.

”All of us wanted to go out, graduating, being at Dodger Stadium,” Dominguez said. “It’s just amazing to be able to finish our high school years at Dodger [Stadium],”

In recent years the team was working on mending team chemistry,

“It wasn’t all there, I think there were a couple pieces of the puzzle missing,”said Altamirano.

With the losses the team faced last year, the team was able to get a “feel for this year,” according to Dominguez.

“Our coach definitely learned from as well as us,” Dominguez said.

This year however things started to change for the better.

“We all kind of just came together, and we started playing for each other,” said Altamirano.

During their game Tuesday, Moreno noted a close call towards the end of the game where a few runs were given up.

Throughout the game, the team faced numerous challenges.

“We hit a couple pop-ups that we thought would end the inning but the sun had a big factor into that and some couldn’t find the ball,” Dominguez said.

Dominguez also said there were some calls from the umpire that ultimately ended up costing The Gondoliers a run but in the end they fought back and won.

To make it this far,, the team handled the pressure well, Moreno said.

“We just went out there and did our thing,” said Moreno.

Tickets will only be sold at the stadium on the day of the game starting at 9 AM and can only be bought using a credit card. General admission tickets will be $15, student tickets with ID will be $12 and children under 4 are free.
