With League competition coming to a close, Venice’s Girls Volleyball program, with an impressive 25-8 overall record, a 8-1 league record and number one ranking, are setting their sights on finishing strong.

The team’s upcoming senior night match against Hamilton next Thursday will be both a celebration and a test. If the Gondoliers can win their final two League games.

Heading into the season, Venice prepared for the loss of seniors while bringing in a younger roster, maintaining a “Reload not Rebuild” mentality.

“Whether you’re a ninth grader or a twelfth grader, you’re expected to be ready to perform in case your numbers are called” states Head Coach Raul Aviles.

This year’s squad includes three freshmen, and with the coaching staff’s planning along with the team’s effort Venice remains a top competitive contender.

According to Aviles, three players have risen above — four year varsity player and varsity Senior Captain Samantha Lortie, three year varsity player and varsity captain Gaia Adeseun-Williams, and junior setter Kaya Richards who “helps run the team through her hands” — having a “consistent impact on Venice’s success”.

The team’s season has been defined by growth and resilience, as Venice faced an early three to two loss against Cleveland and a three to zero loss against Rivals Palisades. the team “took the losses in stride” and adapted and improved according to Aviles. Venice came back to beat Pali the next three times they faced off, and Cleveland whom they have only played once more.
