Boys’ volleyball, 34-13, will take on the 36-9 Chatsworth Chancellors on the road today in the CIF L.A. City Section semifinals. The playoff game will occur at 4:00 P.M.

According to senior Johndiego White, a captain, the Gondoliers will run a different defensive scheme to focus more on Chatsworth’s best hitters.

“We will run more efficient sideouts,” White said. Sideouts means terminating  the opposing team’s right to serve.

Offensively, White stresses the importance of getting his teammates involved.

“They will most likely stagger their defense on me like last time,” White said. “So we should get the other hitters involved as much as possible.”

Senior Josh Martinez, another captain, thinks it is imperative that the Gondoliers bear strong mental fortitude.

“We need to have a next-point mentality and can’t let the past get in our heads,” Martinez said.

The Gondoliers are coming off a 3-0 quarterfinals victory over the Granada Hills Charter Highlanders Wednesday, despite being down a starter.

According to White, everyone stepped up and the game was marked by lots of great performances.

“We moved the ball around well,” White said. “All of our hitters were connected and involved. None of the guys were blocked hard.”

White also applauds the Gondoliers for their stifling defense.

“We had a great blocking day from our middles,” White said. “It allowed less area for our other defenders to cover and better chance for them to funnel their hitters.”
