ASB, the Associated Student Body, does a lot for Venice High, including dances, prom, events, and pep rallies. According to math teacher Mariah Lara, ASB advisor, it’s a place where students can develop their leadership skills.
“A lot of these students have plans once they enter their career, the workplace they go to, they want to kind of be leaders,” she said. “They want to have positions that are higher up.”
ASB is a way for students to get to share their ideas on what should be happening within the school.
“Basically, ASB helps organize events for Venice High, and lets the students get hands-on experience with real life opportunities,” said freshman Faith Lister, the student body historia (who takes photos, documents school events, and handles social media).
Other roles include the president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary.
Student body president represents the school and students, and leads ASB. The vice president assists the president with their roles. The treasurer deals with money, and the secretary keeps track of meetings.
Currently, senior Sora Uchiyama, the vice president, said that in class they are working on organizing rallies, and making posters. ASB is also helping with organizing clubs on campus, including this month’s Club Expo.
Senior Abbasali Fazal, the president, said that there is a “complex process” to planning out events.
First, ASB has to figure out their budget, plan out pricing for tickets, talk with vendors for food, and then organize all the last little details.
“For example, if there’s a DJ, we’re thinking, ‘Is there an outlet? Where’s the nearest outlet?’” Fazal said. It’s these little things that ASB has to figure out that you wouldn’t think could actually be a problem.
ASB helps grow students’ leadership skills for when they go on to bigger and better things later in life.
