Venice High students are melting as they walk between classes, begging to go to the beach, and we’re only 3 weeks into school. Throughout summer, Venice Beach was…ok. It was a bit windy, and for the large majority of June, the ocean water was too cold for a lovely lounging day at the beach.
Here lies my proposal: We should postpone summer a month later. From July-September, students are free to frolic in the sun, then when the clouds start to loom over Los Angeles once again, we can return to our daily routine of snoozing our alarms, and lethargically turning up to school 5 seconds before the bell rings.
In reality it’s not that bad, but I do think that summer should align with the weather better. L.A. is notorious for its “June Gloom” and if student’s want to live a picturebook summer, which I think we all deserve after endless months of arbitrary tests and questionable school lunches, we should take advantage of L.A.’s quirky weather tendencies.
It might be argued that the spring semester is already too long. From January to June, student’s have minimal breaks, with just 1 week for spring break, and the occasional bank holiday thrown in every now and then, but for the most part, students and teachers alike are flat out for those 6 months.
To combat this idea, I suggest we take a week off of winter break, and add it to spring break. This would add a state of solace between the hectic final months.
By moving summer a month later, student’s would be able to enjoy their summer in the sun, and not be trekking through the life ending heat (it’s 72 degrees today).
