With a heat wave coming over SoCal, reaching highs in the country up to 119 degrees. It begs the questions of how P.E classes and athletes will cope.
In an email from Venice High School last Thursday it was stated that there would be “Rescheduled or modified activities for athletics or clubs that involve outdoor play.”
There is an abundance of caution during this heat wave from both the district and our school administration.
Athletic coaches are also finding ways to manage the heat for practices as well.
Assistant Coach for the football team Ignatius Porchia Jr. said, “we’re increasing rest and cool off time,” he said, “allowing players time to be in the shade.”
Coach Iggy also said that they are monitoring the temperature closely and if it gets too high practice will be canceled.
Assistant Baseball Coach Marc Asselin said “it is important to pay attention to the signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration.” Asselin also instructed the students in his conditioning class to bring extra water to deal with the 90 degree temperatures.
Other sports teams like the girls’ flag football team were also affected by the large heat wave. Senior Leilani Taylor, Co-Captain spoke on some of the challenges they faced in the last week.
Taylor said, “the heat was a big disadvantage for our team,” and also, “we had to move into the small gym to practice plays.”
Taylor also said, “we have been providing water for the team to make sure the heat wave does not affect our girls.”
