The Girls’ tennis season is coming to a close, with a successful season under their belt as they charge toward the finals.
The Gondoliers are currently 7-2 overall and 5-1 in league, they are about to face off against Fairfax next Monday and LACES Thursday, in their final two matches of the season.
For these matches, coach Andrew Horen said the focus will be on “trying to be as consistent as possible, making good shot selection, and staying in the moment.”
Horen credits this year’s success to having a team with a lot of depth–making it a formidable opponent against other high schools. This includes three strong freshmen: Zoe McCloud at first singles, and Amaya and Brees Bridges at first doubles.
More experienced players are proving to be assets to the team as well.
“Our veterans are looking really good,” Horen added.
Junior Ella Wind, a captain with senior Kali Lapeyre, also said that “everyone’s consistently performing really well at our games.”
This successful season has not come without adversity though, Horen said. The team has faced challenges in shot selection, returns and beating themselves.
Wind added that another challenge has been “starting a new lineup and having to move people around to play positions they don’t normally play has been an adjustment.” Preparations to overcome these challenges start at practice, with necessary adjustments and tweaks being made before it counts, making sure their players have the best possible game performance.
The Gondos are looking forward to the future and playoffs this fall.
“Given our record and performance, we’re looking very promising,” he said.
Horen highlighted the team as a whole being “a great group of girls who are supporting one another,.”
“I’m having fun, they’re having fun, so it’s been very successful,” he said.
