Clairo looks different in her latest music video for “Terrapin.” Maybe she did something to her hair?
Read across the screen, “Starring as “Clairo” … “Weird Al Yankovich””
I’ve been familiar with “Weird Al,” Alfred Matthew Yanjovich’s work since I was a kid. His ridiculous and beloved musical parodies, which I’ll pretend not to be well-versed in, skyrocketed him to fame in the 1980s. I wasn’t expecting his appearance, but I’m a fan of this choice.
This music video was directed by the amazing Ayo Edibri, who is most known from her roles in The Bear and Bottoms. When my friend and I went to a Clairo show in September, we spotted Ayo there which was followed by an Instagram story of the two together outside the venue with rap duo Paris Texas. You could say we’re all friends by proximity.
The aesthetics of the video are very elegant and pleasing, with cool tones and calming energy. The set of this video, replicating the trademark Charm aesthetic with its colors, and stage design of Clairo’s tour and performance on The Late Night Show starring Jimmy Fallon.
As rhythm guided the space, two women in sparkly-green dresses danced gracefully in unison across each frame. Al(as Clairo) joins the live band, stealing the show playing extravagantly on the keyboard as the rest of the members are confused–including Clairo being a cameo in her own video.
I always highly anticipate the breakdown, encapsulating the flowy yet funky vibe– the highlight of the melody, on what I think is one of the best–if not the best song on the album.
“Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh,” lip synced “Weird Al” as his expressions appeared all over the screen. The light illuminated his face while he opened the door back into his greenhouse.
This music video is beyond well done, each creative decision was executed greatly by the production team. It’s exciting to see Ayo Edibri step into the wheelhouse of directing, I hope to see more work like this from her in the future.
It’s safe to say we’re out of the Claire Cotrill music video drought; it also seems as though she has faced her fear of filming them, which she admitted to in a TikTok. “Terrapin” is the third video dropped in the past months from Clairo’s album, Charm, after “Juna,” and “Sexy to Someone.”
“Terrapin” holds a special place in my heart, and the news of a video felt like the gift of the week. Coming in with high expectations, I can say they were surpassed. I never would have guessed it, but “Weird Al” Yankovich completely embodied the Charm energy–he even played an excellent Clairo.
