In the Varsity Level One Non-tumbling Co-Ed Small Section, Cheer took home second place in the JAMZ School Cheer Nationals in Las Vegas January 25.
“We put on the most difficult routine Venice cheer has ever seen and took Venice Football players and developed them into cheerleaders,” said senior Jillian Griffin, a captain.
Before the JAMZ Nationals, the team competed in the CIF Championships the week before where they secured second place. This limited the time the team had to practice, only starting the Monday of the weeks’ competition to perfect their routine.
“We essentially ran out of time to put the most intricate, difficult routine that we could have probably done given time,” said coach Joanna Trocan.
Despite this, the Gondoliers proved their skill with the limited time they had.
“We’re basically now anything but a first place or national status team,” Trocan said. “The competitive nature of the kids speaks for how far they’ve come. We’re always reaching for that number one spot.”
Griffin attributes a part of the teams’ success to the boys: seniors William Beemer, Noah Devlin, Steele Pearce and Jonathan Galaviz.
“They stepped in to train in our co-ed stunts. The stunts have made our flyers better and have brought us a new perspective given that most of them came from another team,” she said.
