This year’s 58 Annual Grammy Awards will be held this Monday, Feb 15 at the Microsoft Theater hosted by actor and hip-hop artist LL Cool J. This is the first time the award show will be on a Monday due to Valentine’s Day and President’s Day. Music’s biggest night will be livestreamed worldwide for the first time.

A Grammy for a musician or producer is equivalent to an Oscar for an actor

or director. Hip-Hop artist Kendrick Lamar leads the nominations with 11

nominations. His nominations include Album of the Year for “To Pimp A Butterfly” and Song of the Year for his song “Alright.” The Compton native was one nomination off of surpassing the king of pop, Michael Jackson, with his record of 12 nominations. Lamar recently told Tonight Show Host Jimmy Fallon that he doesn’t want to surpass Jackson because he’s the greatest. Lamar had a very successful year. Even President Obama said his lyrics were amazing and his album is outstanding.

The Weekend and Taylor Swift are next to Lamar, both with seven nominations, which also include album of the year. The Weeknd also had a stellar year with various number one singles. Pop princess Taylor Swift delivered a number one album, “1989,” and a sell-out stadium tour. She is one of the favorites amongst critics to take home the gold gramophone.

Senior Joanna Galvez thinks otherwise. “She’s overrated. She’s a great vocalist but her lyrics are corny.”

Other categories the Grammys acknowledged are Best New Artist that include Tori Kelly and Meghan Trainor. Best Pop Vocal Album include Kelly Clarkson, Florence and The Machine, and Mark Ronson. Best Dance/Electronic Album include U.K. brothers, Disclosure for “Caracal,” Skrillex and Diplo’s collaboration album for “Jack U,” and Jamie xx’s solo project, “In Colour.” Not all categories will be aired on television, but will be posted on social media.

This year’s awards will include various performances from powerhouse vocal Adele to the freshest face in music, James Bay. Various duets are bound to happen like Sam Hunt and Carrie Underwood, and Ellie Goulding and Andra Day. Anything can happen at award shows. Tune in at 8 p.m. on CBS and watch.
