Little Known Celebrations
January 23, 2018
February is usually related to the theme of love and Black History Month, but there are celebraions in February that you never knew existed. Here are some unknown celebrations in February that you wish you knew about earlier.
To start the month off strong, you can celebrate National Freedom Day on Feb. 1, the day when the amendment to outlaw slavery was signed by Abraham Lincoln. You can reflect on the importance of freedom and the price past leaders paid for us all to have it.
Next on the list is World Cancer Day on Feb. 4, where you can help thousands of people diagnosed with cancer by spreading the word about cancer and donating to foundations that research a cure for cancer.
The next celebration is a sweet one: World Nutella Day on Feb. 5. Nutella is made of hazelnuts and cocoa and was originally made in Italy due to rising chocolate prices. The spread can be used in all food from bread to cookies.
The delicious celebrations keep on coming with National Pizza Day on Feb. 9. Call up your favorite pizza place and order your favorite pizza. Then just relax and eat your delicious pizza.
After all of that pizza, you may have an upset stomach, but if you don’t, then you can celebrate World Day of the Sick on Feb. 11, where people pray for those that are suffering from illness.
After you have had some rest, you will be full of energy and you can use that energy to celebrate Mardi Gras on Feb. 13. You may not live in New Orleans, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t celebrate “Fat Tuesday” in your own home. Invite some friends over and grab some colored beads and some streamers and have your very own Mardi Gras.
After Valentine’s Day is over, you may feel sad that you didn’t get to celebrate the holiday of love with someone special. But there is nothing wrong with being single and you can celebrate your single status with Singles Awareness Day on Feb. 15. So grab that box of chocolates and enjoy flying solo.
Even though February is the month of love, there are many ways to show someone you care. On Feb. 17, celebrate Random Act of Kindness Day by being nice to the new kid or help a classmate with their homework.
The love doesn’t stop with National Love Your Pet Day on Feb. 20. Give your family pet the attention they deserve and if you don’t have a pet, then you can donate to your local pet shelter, or volunteer there for community service hours.
End the month with a bang and celebrate National Chili Day on Feb. 22. So if your are eating grandma’s secret recipe or eating it canned, you can finish the month off with a savory treat.
