The “Birdbox” Challenge: People Continue To Blindly Follow Internet Trends
February 3, 2019
The thriller film “Bird Box” was released on Dec. 13 and has taken the internet by storm. The film that follows Malorie, played by Sandra Bullock, as she and two children try to find refuge against a mysterious force that drives people to suicide if they see it.
Because “Bird Box” was such a hit, of course, there had to be someone who turned the film into a challenge. Malorie and the two children embark on a dangerous journey down a river and through the woods to find a sanctuary that will offer them help, all while being blindfolded in order to stay alive.
The “Bird Box Challenge” asks people to record themselves recreating scenes from the film or doing daily activities while wearing a blindfold. People are posting videos of themselves participating in the challenge on various social media platforms. As the challenge got more popular, it got more out of hand and Netflix made a statement on Twitter warning people not to hurt themselves doing this challenge.
Participants started to take this challenge outside the safety of their homes and some took this challenge on the road. Unfortunately, a 17-year-old girl and the 16-year-old passenger crashed into oncoming traffic while participating in this challenge in Layton, Utah, according to Fox 13 news. Luckily nobody was hurt, but the driver lost control of her car and skidded on the wrong side of the road, hitting another vehicle while she had her beanie pulled over her eyes. Although nobody was hurt, the “Bird Box Challenge” can be very risky.
This isn’t the only popular challenge that has resulted in a close call or injury. Back in June 2018, the “In My Feelings Dance” became a very popular internet trend. People all over the internet were filming themselves dancing alongside a moving car to Drake’s song. This resulted in many people getting hurt and one Iowa City teen even fractured her skull.
Every day the internet is taken over by another popular trend and the “Bird Box Challenge” was no exception. Even though these internet challenges can be fun and lighthearted, there are still dangers that come alongside it. “Bird Box” was an acceptable film created Netflix and definitely deserves a watch, but the “Bird Box Challenge” should be avoided.
