There’s a new place to grab around the Venice neighborhood where you can grab a cup of coffee and get wax for your board. Saba Surf Cafe, a surf shop, has recently opened up a new coffee shop down the street from Venice High.
Senior Kaeli Kennedy has gone a couple times already, and she finds Saba Surf to be “relaxed.”
According to Laura Quintana, the owner, she wanted to combine a surf shop with a coffee, because there are tons of surf shop cafes in Orange County—but not many in Los Angeles.
Their goal is to make the space feel like a community for people to interact, express themselves, and learn about each other.
“Anyone that lives in the area could come, hang out, grab a cup of coffee, meet with people, and have a place where they can come and work and create,” Quintana said.
“We needed a place to make our wax but obviously we can’t pay rent here just by selling our surf wax—so we were like, ‘Okay well what’s something that everyone loves? Coffee.’”
They also plan on having events where they have vendors and food trucks come together to support other local small businesses and the surfing community.
Quintana described the aesthetic as being “like a garage but with nice things.”
“You can come in and touch everything and nothing is gonna break but it’s still like quality products,”
