Pumpkin Pie Quest

Every year, spanning from the beginning of October to early January, bakeries, restaurants, and pie shops all over Los Angeles sell their version of the classic pumpkin pie. I have spent the past three years searching for the best pumpkin pie Los Angeles has to offer. The best pie I’ve had to date was from Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery. Sadly, the only Bouchon Bakery in Los Angeles, located in Beverly Hills, closed on December 31 in 2017. While you can no longer purchase this pie, here are my next favorite spots:

  1. Know Reality Pie in Eagle Rock had a pumpkin pie I had been looking forward to for months, and the wait was worth it. The filling was creamy and smooth and paired nicely with the bready crust. The homemade whipped cream provided great flavor and texture. An incredible slice of pie for a reasonable price. Owner Tracey Ann bakes a variety of flavors that change every week – I’ve had everything from Pumpkin Whopper to Pumpkin Nutella.
  2. Mel’s Diner is located in Santa Monica and has the perfect atmosphere, from the 25¢ jukeboxes to the pie itself: a classic slice presented beautifully and topped with whipped cream. A satisfying slice that filled my pie cravings. From the old diner vibes to the Beatles songs playing in the background, this pie experience was not one to miss.
  3. The pumpkin pie from Cassell’s Hamburgers in Koreatown definitely exceeded my expectations. The gingerbread crust keeps the pie together nicely and the slice was topped with whipped cream and pumpkin seeds. The filling was very creamy and very tasty. You can’t go wrong with this pie!
