Boys’ soccer, 1-1-1, will face the Hamilton Yankees today at 4:30.
Coach Nick Webster believes that “the team will match up very well with Hamilton and get very positive results.” The Yankees are traditionally quite strong.
“Man for man, we’ll perform well against Hamilton,” he said.
The Gondoliers are full of incredible players with strong leadership throughout the senior group and some exciting juniors, Webster said. There are also sophomores and freshmen who have “really taken on board with what we have been trying to teach them.”
“I think there’s an excitement around the squad that they haven’t experienced in years,” he said. Freshmen Alejandro Gamero and Sebastien Huffman are also making a big difference.
Junior Billy Quinn, a co-captain with senior Hector Torres, said that junior Zack Lev has been “a shifty attacking midfielder.”
With the quality of the team this year, Webster looks to go far and challenge for the league title.
Torres believes that the team can go far, too.
“We’ve talked about it and agreed on how winning CIF is definitely something we’d want to do,” he said.
Last Wednesday, the Gondoliers secured a 0-0 tie against Palisades, 1-0-1, after returning from Thanksgiving break.
“We’ve lost to Pali for about the last six or seven years, so to go to their homeground and get a tie with them was incredible,” Webster said. “Obviously, Pali, the big dogs, win the league every year, and you measure yourself against them.”
Looking at the match as a whole, Webster believes that “Venice deserved to win.”
Despite this, Webster is very proud and excited about the team’s performance and energy levels.
