Football, 5-4 overall, will be going against the Westchester Comets tonight, 8-1, on Senior Night at 7:30 P.M.
With the matchup against the Comets being the last game of the league season, they will “treat it like playoffs” as they will be crowned city champions, said senior Tate Evarts, a captain alongside seniors Noah Devlin and Nathan Santacruz.
“If we beat Westchester, we will be the city champions,” he said. “That is our number one focus right now. We’re treating it with the day by day, next play by next play mentality.”
This game against Westchester will determine the seeding of the Gondoliers in either the Division One or Open Division Championships.
“If we go Division One, we’ll be one of the top ranked teams. If we go Open Division, we’ll probably be at the bottom of the division,” Evarts said.
At the beginning of the season, the Gondoliers struggled against their non-league opponents but now in the league have “figured it out.”
“We’ve been rolling through league,” Evarts said. The Gondos boasted undefeated status in the league season with a 4–0 record.
This year, the team contains 18 seniors. Evarts highlights the senior captains of the team: Devlin, Santacruz and himself.
“We have a lot of senior captains, and those guys are the leaders of our team, especially with a team full of young guys as well,” he said.
“Having seniors on the team helps the younger players see leadership and maybe it’ll rub off on them so that when their time comes, they’re to go,” Evarts said.
