The Marvel Cinematic Universe has never failed to amaze me. This expansive collection of superhero-centered films has consistently drawn millions of Marvel fans into theaters to watch their favorite characters in action time and time again.
As a Marvel fan myself, it’s always been something that’s drawn my family together. Take it from me—there is nothing that unites my family more than watching Guardians of The Galaxy, or Spider-man: Homecoming for the fiftieth time.
And now, for the first time in four years, Marvel fans from all over the world are reassembling over the newest addition to the Captain America saga within the MCU.
Captain America: Brave New World was not as Marvelous as I was hoping it would be. The action scenes and special effects were alright and the actors did a stellar job playing their characters, but the plot had about as much depth as a kiddie pool.
The story begins in Mexico, where Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and the new Falcon (Joaquin Torres) are given a task to expose the Serpent Society, whose evil scheme is to steal a big chunk of metal from Japan: Adamantium.
From what I saw, the U.S. government wanted Adamantium because they idiotically thought, “Well, if Wakanda gets to have Vibranium, then we should also own a powerful alloy that we know absolutely nothing about except for the fact that it’s indestructible and hopefully not radioactive!”
President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) said something in the beginning of the movie, though, that really got my hopes up. He told Captain America that he wanted him to get the Avengers back together.
This part got me really excited, because I thought that the whole point of the movie was that Sam Wilson was going to reunite the Avengers. But, nope, that didn’t happen, because the movie was titled Captain America: Brave New World, not Avengers: Reassemble.
In the movie, America has a new captain. Steve Rogers retired and passed down his shield to Sam Wilson, formerly the Falcon. He was the obvious, and maybe the best option to replace Captain America, but it feels very different to have someone else .
Everyone loved the original Captain America because he was the original. He was the first Avenger, the leader of the Avengers. But now that he’s vanished off the face of Earth-616 and in another dimension with his wife, the guy that comes in and replaces him suddenly seems like an intruder.
I know that Captain America named Sam his successor when he left, and in my opinion, he made the right choice. But it’ll be hard to get used to a new face behind Captain America’s mask.
In a way, this sort of relates to America’s leadership situation. America’s got a new leader, and no, the one before wasn’t exactly ‘Captain America,’ but the President America has now doesn’t sit well with me, or anyone else, for that matter.
It was hard to focus on the movie’s plot when I saw America in almost every scene of this movie. I always saw the Avengers and Captain America as my form of patriotism, showing the good side of America, the one that always prevailed over the bad guys.
But now, when I see that America isn’t doing so well in both the movies and the real world, I’m losing faith in my country.
Don’t get me wrong, I love America, and nothing would ever change that. But when even Marvel Entertainment, my reality refuge, starts to point out the flaws in our country, I know there’s a big problem. Now I feel like I can’t even turn to Marvel to escape from the deathly grip of the real world.
But is Marvel turning to politics because they are simply running out of plot ideas? Or does Marvel just so happen to be infusing their newest film with politics, despite the current state of our nation? All I have to say is, in the words of the famous Sabrina Carpenter, “What a coincidence!”
Despite an overwhelming amount of reality hidden everywhere in the movie, overall it was a relatively decent film.
I would highly suggest that you watch Captain America: Brave New World if you’re a Marvel fan. It’s definitely not Marvel’s best movie, but it wasn’t their worst either. Marvel has already announced plans to make another Avengers movie in 2026, so I have something to look forward to while I rewatch Captain America: The Winter Soldier for literally the seventh time.
