In today’s music landscape, there are hundreds of thousands of artists out there. Online, we are constantly being exposed to music from all kinds of genres, because so many people now have the ability to share their art with the world.
Of course it’s amazing that so many people are able to share their creations with the world, and thanks to social media, being a full time music artist doesn’t feel quite as far away for the average person. However, for us listeners, we can grow numb to the individuality of music. So when we find an artist that feels truly original, it feels special. Katerina lomis is one of those artists.
Emerging on the music scene late last year, Lomis has quickly grown in popularity. Her social media content has garnered a fanbase of over 216k followers on instagram, 61.8k followers on tiktok, and 32k monthly listeners on spotify. Numbers aside, it’s her unique, genre bending sound that sets her apart.
“Usually, it’s just very free writing, and it kind of ends up just being a compilation.” Lomis said. “If I had to try to classify it, it would be jazz, musical theater, pop folk and also kind of rap.”
If you’ve heard her music, you know what she means. Her tracks are a mix of key elements from several different styles. Most notably, her signature scatting, something she learned from Jessica Deskin, a jazz classical pianist from Berkeley. Deskin taught Lomis to be comfortable with scatting and musical improv, something that’s stayed within Lomis and grown into one of her most recognisable qualities.
“She’d get five or six of her students in a room, and would just make us sing jazz standards and pass it on to each other while she played the piano,” said Lomis.
This was in 10th grade, but Lomis’s musical journey started long before high school. She wrote her first songs in fourth grade, and had been playing piano since she was barely five. While some passions for music develop over time, Lomis’s has seemingly always been there.
Professionally releasing music isn’t Lomis’s only passion, as she is currently studying cancer research.
When discussing her career path she said, “Up until a year ago, I was planning on either going to dental school or becoming a PhD.”
Before she started focusing on her music, she was a full time student. “I was working in a lab. And I was like, Wait, low key, anyone could do this. I feel like I should be doing something with my voice.”
Since then, she has been releasing one song a month, slowly gaining an audience and exploring her musical style. This past month, she had her first live show in Miami. She played many originals along with her new single “Mr. Adams”, released April 25th.
It’s really amazing when you can find a small artist that’s unique and talented, and Katerina Lomis is certainly one of those artists.
