In efforts to help out those affected by Hurricane Harvey, Venice’s Black Student Union began to collect donations. From clothes to personal items, they collected everything. Not only have Venice students shown interest in helping, but parents have also taken action and made donations.

“There’s one parent of a cheerleader who is going to bring like 30 backpacks, which you know the kids lost everything, so that’ll be good.” Mrs. Traci Thrasher, the leader of BSU said the first week of the collection.

Hurricane Harvey was a destructive category 3 Atlantic hurricane that hit many different places like Texas and Louisiana and the countries of Belize, Nicaragua, Honduras and more. Texas was the most affected from all the places it hit. Due to the intense flooding, many people lost their homes along with all their belongings and 82 deaths were reported in Texas alone.

BSU was able to organize the donations through LAUSD Local District West. LAUSD has opened many collection locations throughout the District. Mrs. Thrasher is accepting donations in Room 14 until the end of this week before she takes them to the collection center for shipping to Texas.
