Flag football, 11–1, has gone undefeated in their league this season, and is hoping to keep that momentum going into the post-season.
The Gondoliers won 20-13 in Wednesday’s game against number one seed Thomas Jefferson, with sophomore Kaydyn Mendoza getting an interception in the last quarter that allowed for the team to score and break the tie.
Coach Brianna Vestal wants the team to “stay sharp” and have a quick start to every game.
“The girls tend to not get energy until the second half of the game,” she said.
To combat this issue, Vestal has added a few things to the team’s pre-game routine.
“I’ve incorporated having music in their warm-ups and making sure that when they are warming up they are going full speed,” she said.
Senior Khalia Rodriguez, a co-captain alongside senior Samantha Moreno, is also focused on improving for the post-season.
“We just need to prepare and expect good players,” she said.
Rodriguez also wants to get better at the team’s new tactics.
“Our coach created new plays for us and we’re just gonna run through those plays and get everyone’s minds right,” she said.
The team also played Hamilton October 30 and shut them out 25-0. Venice’s defense dominated the game with freshman Avery Wind making a crucial flag pull to keep the Yankees scoreless.
