Softball, 23-8, dominated the CIF City Division 1 championships, winning by at least two runs over every team they played.
In the title game, May 30, the Gondoliers defeated Eagle Rock 7-2.
Venice gained an early lead, but the Eagles recovered with a two run burst. Ultimately, Venice persevered and held them off.
The Gondoliers ended their season in the CIF State Division 3 playoffs, losing to the Mission College Prep Royals 4-2 last Tuesday.
A contributor to the team’s success was focusing on the fundamentals, according to senior Abby Ascencio, a co-captain with senior Sandy Carrera.
The team’s culture also played an important role in this season’s achievements.
“A lot of us have made good bonds even outside of softball,” said Ascencio. “We’re always there for each other, no matter what.”
Next year, the Gondoliers will be losing six seniors, including four starters. Ascension and Carrera, along with Samantha Moreno, Kassidy Rodriguez, Khalia Rodriguez, and Miranda Soto are all graduating.
“That’s going to be a tough group to replace,” said coach Eddie Soto.
Looking ahead to next season, Soto’s goals for the team remain the same, even with the loss of assistant coach Angelo Gasca earlier this semester.
“Our goals are never going to change,” he said. “We want to compete at the highest level and win the championship.”
Soto is confident next year’s team will be able to achieve those goals.
“We’re looking pretty good for the future.”
