Boys' Water Polo Makes A Comeback For The Season

Boys’ water polo, 7-2, has improved greatly from last season and is looking to keep the momentum going in the postseason.

One thing that has contributed to this improvement is the summer practices the team held from March to the end of July.

“[The club] is exclusive to just the Venice students, so we had about half the team compete this summer,” said coach Rigo Mora.

Junior Nico Grizzel, the team’s goalie, said that the summer practices “helped the people that were attending to develop a lot of better skills, break bad habits,” and that they “developed a strong connection” on the team.

The Gondos most recently played their first game of the post-season against Santee, 4-6. They blew the Falcons out of the water, beating them 21-2.

The team also played San Pedro, 5-13, on the 27th. The game was close until the very end and went into overtime. Junior Hector Ortega scored the game-winning goal, leading the Gondos to a 9-7 victory.

The team had a match up against University, 0-9, on the 23rd. The Gondos crushed the Wildcats with a score of 24-11. Senior Theo Romero is happy with the improvement, but thinks there is still room to grow. “I’m very happy for the win, but, in my opinion, I’m always looking forward for how to improve even more.”

For Mora, there’s no doubt that his team can win it all.

“We have such a talented group and everyone is ready to compete and ready to put 100 percent in,” he said. “We have no reason why we shouldn’t be champions at the end of the season.”
