On late morning November day, the moon was preparing to be a waxing crescent phase. It’s a phase that increases new energy and growth.
It was also the day that four Oarsman spiritual seekers all went to see Psychic Miss Molly located in Culver City to get their palms read.
Miss Molly said that she’s been doing business for around seven years. As a child, she felt she had a spiritual gift different from others, and described it as reading between the lines of spiritual vibrations.
Here’s what four Venice students learned.

Imogen (junior, Libra)
As a kid I would curiously read from The Little Witch’s Book of Spells and follow the tutorials on how to make a pendulum, and collect ingredients for harmless spells. So when we decided to go to a psychic, it felt like I was making a dream come true for my younger self.
Sitting outside on a bench next to a coffee shop, one person at a time stepped inside the amethyst-colored door, not knowing what to expect to be told from the lines of their palms.
When I walked through the door, I was greeted with a very welcoming, calming vibe, and shades of purple everywhere.
Psychic Miss Molly had me hold out my hand then make a fist and show her the side as she looked intently at my palm.
She then had me lie my hand out flat for the rest of the time. She stared at my palm.
It was not at all what I was expecting. I was expecting for her to trace every line with her finger and then tell me what she envisioned for my path.
After she asked me my date of birth, she focused on my career. I was told that she was picking up a sense of uncertainty about what I want to do in the future career-wise.
Even though I am only 17 and shouldn’t have everything figured out, I know I can be a pretty indecisive person. So her feeling that I may always carry this sense of uncertainty career-wise felt very mystically trustworthy to me.
Psychic Miss Molly sensed that I may open my own store of some sort that incorporates all my interests. I mean I don’t know if I really see myself doing that, but for the fun of it, I trust the psychic!
Throughout the reading my palm started feeling like heavy air was sitting on it and pushing it down and I started almost wondering if there was some sort of energy in the room causing this feeling.
I choose to believe that the psychic was working her palm reading magic on me.
Sophia (junior, Taurus)
As I walked into the calming, nature-themed shop expecting a dark-lit room with a light layer of fog coating the floors, I very quickly realized I over-dramatized what visiting a modern-day psychic would be like.
I thought being a psychic meant that she would speak to a dead relative of mine through the purple mist of a crystal ball. Instead, she calmly asked me to lay open my palm, and stared at the intricate carvings on my hand.
Psychic Miss Molly sensed that I had two potential career paths in my life, which was true—I’ve been stuck between whether or not I want to pursue a career as a journalist or in something to do with politics, like a legislator.
After I opened up to her about what those paths were, she said that for the next few years I should focus my energy on journalism, and after I did that, she saw that I could either stay with journalism or potentially explore a career in politics, but that it was more of a choice I could make rather than a path predestined for me.
She also said that I was going to be successful by 30 no matter what career choice I make, so one can only hope it’ll be enough to pay off my future student loan debt.
Although I’m religious, I absolutely love astrology and psychics. And while some may consider that a contradiction, I personally don’t consider them to be mutually exclusive.
I’m a big believer that things are said to me at specific times for a reason. I believe that the world we live in is designed with intention because it’s how I lead with intention. It’s why I believe in God. It’s also why I check my horoscope frequently. It’s also why I google every few weeks whether or not Mercury is in retrograde, because you can never be too sure.
I always believe there is something to be learned from every experience or interaction, even if I can’t connect with everything being said in the moment, and even if I don’t believe in it.
So I’ll take the words of wisdom Miss Molly gave me and put them in my back pocket for now. I’m now going to be more intentional about my career choice, listening with open ears to the new possibilities and opportunities coming my way.
I’m only mildly disappointed there was no crystal ball.
Emily (sophomore, Scorpio)
When Sophia, Imogen, Caroline and I got to the psychic, it seemed like a normal, cozy little store, in the middle of Culver City. It was very different from my imaginings of a dark curtained room containing crystals and candles, yet it made me feel at ease. Upon walking in, I saw a table with plush chairs on either side, star charts on the walls, and greenery gently creeping over the walls.
Psychic Miss Molly was also completely different from my imagination, in the most pleasant way. When we walked in, I was half expecting a dramatic, almost animated woman who would tell me my greatest secrets. Although she simply wore a flowy green dress and minimal jewelry, like her workspace, she made me feel at ease.
We each went in one at a time to get a 15 minute palm reading about our career and relationships. When it was my turn, a nervousness overcame me as I stepped into her room.
Although I won’t go into detail about my reading, it was certainly an experience.
I noticed that a few minutes into the session, while I had my palm face up on her table, the energy in the room shifted. It wasn’t quite a vibration, although Miss Molly did describe the spiritual vibrations coming from me. This vibe switch made the rest of the session feel different, somehow.
The entire reading felt like a conversation, although I’m not sure if Miss Molly was communicating with me or my energy. At one point, I was just entranced by her eyes, which were large and green, with the tips of her eyelashes flaked with gold bits that fluttered when she blinked.
By the time the reading was over, I felt completely relaxed, and enlightened. I still haven’t decided whether her reading was accurate or not, but to me, the spiritual energy felt real.
Although I may never know how spiritual powers work, this visit showed me what being a psychic really means: not flamboyant powers and theatrics, but building an authentic connection with other human beings to help them find clarity in their lives.
Caroline (sophomore, Scorpio)
Before seeing Miss Molly, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. Although I often consider myself someone fairly logical— even when the occasional bout of delusion strikes—I was still excited to see what (if anything) the “stars” had to say.
I was supposed to have a 15 minute session. But when I walked in the room, I felt like I was sitting down with someone oddly familiar.
I laid out my palm, and as she pressed into the lines on my hands she told me she would tell me about my career and relationships. She first asked me questions about the people in my life, what I thought I wanted to become. She then started speculating about my future, talking succinctly but almost as if driven by an unstoppable motor. It was the energy she received that was causing an overflow of insight into what my “crossroads” of a future me.
Some things she said certainly hit home and made me reevaluate certain aspects of my life. Before I knew it, 25 minutes had passed, and according to my friends It was like I was lost in some far away world, and in a way I suppose I was. While I won’t say everything she revealed, I will say that one thing she told me that has stuck with me since is that not everything is meant to be stressed, planned, and thought out.
Ultimately, if something in your life is meant to happen it will, and time isn’t always a thief. Sometimes it’s a gift.
